Francis Donkin Bedord (1864-1954) first trained as an architect but gradually turned to painting and illustration work. Elegance and clarity of colour characterise his work. His individual style is highlighted in the series of beautifully designed books of verses by E.V. Lucas which began with The Book of Shops.

Edward Verrall Lucas (1868-1938) was a prolific writer on travel, art and literature. His guide books of English and European cities were hugely popular. During the First World War he wrote a satire on the German Emperor Wilhelm II, "swollen-headed William", which was based on Heinrich Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter.
