John Burningham was an English author and illustrator of children's books, especially picture books for young children. He lived in north London with his wife Helen Oxenbury, another illustrator.

His first book, Borka: The Adventures of a Goose With No Feathers (1963) won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1963, an achievement he repeated with Mr Gumpy's Outing (1970). In 2012, he was shortlisted for a Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, which celebrates one living illustrator's lasting contribution to children's literature.
